HTC Magic worldwide sales surpass 1 Million mark

Based on Q2 2009 sales figures released by Gartner, HTC appears to be doing pretty well having a firm lock at the no. 4 spot in the smartphone segment of the market with Fujitsu at a distant fifth place. This probably thanks to the impressive sales of their second Android phone, the HTC Magic.

First released via Vodafone in April, which incidentally is also the start of Q2, over 1 million HTC Magic phones have been sold wordlwide already based on the announcement made by HTC. This feat is extra special considering that HTC’s market reach is nowhere near Nokia’s, and the brand’s appeal is certainly not as strong to demand a devoted following similar to that of Apple or RIM. One thing that’s probably going the HTC Magic’s way, though, is that it runs on Android. This new mobile operating system makes it a nice alternative for those looking for a different platform apart from Windows Mobile and Symbian that is more or less at par with the iPhone and its mobile Mac OS X.

HTC also took the time to let everybody know that they’re now planning to focus more on mid-end smartphones for the remainder of the year. Peter Chou disclosed that roughly 50-60% of their shipments for the 2H of 2009 will be mid-end phones that will retail for around $300.

This should good news for consumers, and for HTC as well considering how the market has changed as a result of the global financial crisis. High-end phone sales have significantly gone down and more affordable entry to mid-level phones are all the rage these days. With HTC committing to produce more mid-end phones, this should help jack up sales, and in turn, improve their position in the industry.
