RIM acquires Torch Mobile, WebKit browser looming in the BlackBerry horizon
RIM has just made a major acquisition that will, in effect, put them in a very good position as far as mobile internet browsers are concerned. What are we talking about in particular? Well, RIM has just officially acquired Canadian software company Torch Mobile.
As a quick backgrounder on who Torch Mobile is, they’re the ones behind the development of the WebKit mobile browser called Iris. Now that the Torch Mobile is owned by RIM, BlackBerry users can finally rejoice at the idea of a WebKit-based browser finally becoming available on their phones one of these days as most will agree, the default BlackBerry internet browser isn’t exactly the best in town.
For those wondering what the fuss is all about with WebKit browsers, this is an open source software used for mobile internet browsers such as the ones found on the iPhone, Palm Pre, some Nokia phones, and Android smartphones. That short list of mobile phones, in itself, already speaks highly of the capabilities of this mobile internet browser platform.
With this new acquisition, we can only see brighter things ahead for RIM.
