Sony Ericsson replacing Windows Mobile with Symbian S60 platform

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 is recognized as the second XPERIA offering from the beleaguered mobile phone maker. More importantly, though, as Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-review points out, it could also very well be the last Windows Mobile-powered Sony Ericsson phone as well.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2

Putting things into perspective, this isn’t really the first time we’ve heard that Sony Ericsson will be breaking their ties with Windows Mobile. As a matter of fact, it was around this time last year when the uncertain future of the Windows Mobile platform on the XPERIA line was first brought to light. With this latest news and the upcoming XPERIA X3 now sporting Android, things are looking a little more definite this time around. Actually, there’s another Sony Ericsson Windows Mobile-powered phone supposedly in the works, but the report says it could be canned before its released into the market.

So, what will Sony Ericsson phones run on then? Aside from the Android OS, the company is now reportedly looking to expand their Symbian S60-based line-up. We know of one S60 phone on the way in the form of the 12-megapixel Satio, and word is that at least 3 more phones are on the way next year. Given the current stature of the S60 platform, it’s the next best logical choice for Sony Ericsson, in our opinion, in lieu of a homegrown system.

How about you guys? What’s your take on this whole split-up between Sony Ericsson and Microsoft?
