Verizon unleashes HTC Droid Eris for only $99 (2-yr contract, $100 MIR)

Verizon has just announced the HTC Droid Eris, their second Android phone next to the Motorola Droid which they debuted last month.

Verizon HTC Droid Eris

The HTC Droid Eris features a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, full HTML browser with Flash Lite support, 3.5mm jack, HTC Sense UI, and comes pre-installed with an 8GB microSD card. They didn’t go into detail as to what version of Android version is running on this baby, but a prior report suggests that Android 1.5 is its main OS. That’s the real deal breaker in the whole package. Hope is not lost, however, as there is still a chance that HTC could release an Android 2.0 firmware update sometime in the near future. You can read the full press release here.

The HTC Droid Eris is now available and retailing for only $99 with a new 2-year contract (after a $100 mail-in rebate is applied) on Verizon. Those who found the Motorola Droid a bit too expensive for their budget now have a more affordable alternative with Verizon’s new Android offering, the HTC Droid Eris.
