Bell officially announces Samsung Galaxy, $99.95 (3-yr contract)

True to the previous report, Bell has officially announced today the Samsung Galaxy as their first Android offering to their loyal subscribers in Canada.

Bell Samsung Galaxy

What sets the Samsung Galaxy apart from the rest of the Android phones in Canada is its 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen. It’s currently the only AMOLED equipped Android handset in Canada to date. It’s protected by tempered glass which comes with anti-scratch properties as well. To complement this, the Galaxy features a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity, and 8GB internal memory. The silver lining here though is that it only comes loaded with Android 1.5. Hopefully, they won’t follow in Rogers’ footsteps and will actually release an appropriate update later on for their Android subscribers.

The Samsung Galaxy is retailing for $99.95 on a 3-yr contract with a minimum $50/month voice and data plan on Bell. Getting it on a 2-yr contract will cost $299.95 while opting for a single year contract will amount to $399.95. Outright purchase price is at $449.95. As an added incentive, buyers will also be getting a free Vancouver 2010 decal as part of the package. You can check it out here.

“The Samsung Galaxy had been designed to let every user show his or her true colours and set up their phone the way they want; the way that best suits their lifestyle and gives them what they want instantly,” said Paul Brannen, General Manager, Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics Canada. “With Galaxy they can access breaking entertainment news, check sports scores, find the nearest restaurants, read movie reviews or learn about the latest chart toppers – all through easily accessible, quickly downloadable, user-friendly apps from Google’s Android Market.”

The Samsung Galaxy operates on Bell Mobility’s HSPA network, the fastest, largest and most reliable wireless network in Canada, which reaches approximately 93% of the population in 20,000 towns and cities, and offers roaming in 200 countries worldwide.

“The Galaxy is a remarkable phone, providing speedy access to the best Google services, great entertainment services and thousands of must-have apps,” said Adel Bazerghi, Senior Vice President of Products at Bell Mobility “Thanks to Bell’s new state-of-the-art HSPA wireless network – Canada’s largest, fastest and most reliable – Bell Mobility clients will enjoy an unparalleled Android experience: super-fast mobile Internet access, dependable video and audio streaming, robust text, picture, video and email messaging services and many other high performing features.”

The wireless device comes equipped with a suite of Google Mobile Services for enhanced simplicity and ease-of-use, including Gmail, Google Talk and Google Maps. Google Talk allows users to chat with their loved ones, while Gmail ensures their calendar and contacts are up to date and provides instant alerts for incoming mail.
