Sony Ericsson Q4 2009 report: Better than Q3, Not as good as 2008

Sony Ericsson has released their Q4 and 2009 full year report, and while the figures are still a far cry from what they used to be back in their glory days, at least they’ve managed to consistently improve on their performance on a quarterly basis.

14.6 million units were shipped in the last quarter which is a step up from the 14.1 million phones sold in Q3. As a result, gross margin rose to 23% from a low of 16% in the previous quarter. Sony Ericsson’s loss for Q4 2009 was also down to just €40 million as compared to Q3’s €198. Given that 2009 wasn’t exactly a banner year for the industry as a whole, it doesn’t come as a surprise that their full year report fails in comparison to their 2008 achievements. They only managed to ship 57.1 million phones in 2009 whereas 96.6 million units were sold in 2008. Sony Ericsson’s total loss for 2009 is a whopping €878 million.

Here’s what Sony Ericsson president Bert Nordberg shares about his company this coming year:

We will continue to focus on returning the company to profitability by establishing Sony Ericsson as the communication entertainment brand based on an exciting portfolio of mid- and high-end products, such as our recently announced Android-based phone, the XPERIA X10. 2010 will still be challenging as the full benefit of cost improvements will not impact results until the second half of the year, however we are confident that our business is on the right track.

Considering the upward trend in their figures, we’ve no reason to question Mr. Nordberg’s optimism. However, with the industry getting more competitive as the months go by with new players entering the scene, it’ll definitely be a more challenging uphill battle for Sony Ericsson from here on end.
