BlackBerry OS 6 a Huge Leap Forward
The much touted BlackBerry OS 6 is coming, and it’s bringing a wheelbarrel full of improvements.
New features include multiple home screens, the ability to use the trackball/trackpad to effortlessly scroll over to apps that previously required numerous keystrokes, a brand new web browser with tabbing ability, an enhanced BlackBerry menu options list, and an overhauled media player and tab application switcher.
While some hard core BlackBerry fans remain disgruntled that the new OS is still built on an aging architecture and argue that a genunely new, ground-up build is required to compete with new offerings in the market, I must say that what I’ve seen from a beta version of OS 6 will make many BlackBerry fans very happy.
BlackBerry OS 6 is smooth and modern, allowing you to return to open apps via the trackball, rather than the current and cumbersome backstepping required. It’s also flashier, more fun and even easier to do what you’ve been doing all along.
The release date for OS 6 is June/July. And I have it on good authority that it will be made available for a host of current BlackBerry models, including the Curve 8500 series and higher, the Tour and Storm.
Please note that while the Beta version is very exciting, much can change prior to release. No one yet knows the final specs and capabilities of the coming OS 6, but if it retains much of what I witnessed, it will be a huge leap forward for RIM and a welcome upgrade for BlackBerry users.
