iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 (briefly) becomes Available; Loaded with New Features

iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 briefly went live yesterday, but before most developers could get their hands on this new version, Apple surprisingly pulled it off their servers.

We’re not sure what prompted them to make such a drastic move, but fortunately, the folks over at BGR got their hands on one and they’re gladly sharing with the rest of the iPhone-crazed community what are some of the new goodies beta 3 comes loaded with.

First off, we already know that multitasking will be one of the major features in iPhone OS 4.0 via the new pop-up app switcher, and thanks to this new beta release, we also now know that users can easily close apps via the same interface. Simply press and hold one of the apps on the app switcher and the option to close apps will appear.

Another new feature found in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 is the media player widget. Swiping to the far left of the app switcher will load this new widget which also comes complete with an orientation lock button (the far left button).

Last, but certainly not the least, file sharing is also enabled in this latest beta firmware release. We’re not sure what file types will be supported and how this will actually work, but based on what’s being reported (and the screen shot provided above), there’s a new option enabled in the Apps page of iTunes that allows users to click and drag documents to and from an iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 powered iPhone.
Of course, being that this is still a beta version, some or even all of these new features could eventually be cut from the final public version, but nonetheless, we like what we’re seeing so far. Hopefully, now that it’s in beta 3 form already, the next thing we’ll see made available to the public is the final working version of iPhone OS 4.0.
