Mobilicity gets Approved by the CRTC to operate in Canada
It’s been a while since we last heard news about Mobilicity (the carrier formerly known as DAVE Wireless). However, a report from CBC New confirms that the new carrier has gotten the go signal from the CRTC to finally begin operations in Canada this spring provided that they make some minor changes to their ownership and control structure.
The CRTC wants them to veto rights of Quadrangle Capital Partners, a New York-based company, and John Bitove and his company Obelysk, two of the carrier’s biggest shareholders. They are also requiring Mobilicity to add one more Canadian-nominated director to their board increasing the total number of members to 10 (up from just 9) with the chair being a Canadian. The CRTC is giving Mobilicity 30 days to make the necessary changes, but the carrier’s chief operating officer Stewart Lyons assures the public that they have no issues meeting the deadline set for them:
Any change is significant, but we’ll be making them so we’ll be there within the prescribed time frame.
Once they officially roll out their services in Canada, Mobilicity is expected to go live first in Toronto this spring with Calgary, Edmonton, Ottowa and Vancouver to follow suit thereafter. Watch out Bell, Telus and Rogers. The upstarts are slowly growing in numbers.
