Smartphone market continues to grow, iPhone sales up by 131% for Q1 2010
Back in 2007, a lot of people were skeptical in Apple’s entry into the mobile industry with the launch of the very first iPhone. Fast forward to the present, no one now questions the marketability of the iPhone which, according to the latest IDC report, has in fact increased its sales by a whopping 131% compared to the same period last year. Putting things into perspective, however, that growth is still not good enough to put Apple within striking distance of industry leader Nokia, but it’s still impressive nonetheless.
HTC and Motorola both also improved on their performance for Q1 2010 year with 71% and 91% growth respectively largely thanks to Google’s Android platform. Nokia, as expected, is at the top while RIM is still in second place despite a drop in their market share (down to 19.4% from 20.9% in Q1 2009). Apple is at no. 3 (now 16.1% up from 10.9%) followed by HTC (now 4.8% up from 4.3%) and Motorola (now 4.2% up from 3.4%).
Over-all, the smartphone industry grew 56.7% year-over-year with 54.7 million devices being shipped in the 1st quarter alone for 2010. This figure will no doubt continue its upward trend for 2010 as more manufacturers hop on-board the Android bandwagon and Apple set to release their new 4G iPhone this coming June.
