As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Friday, June 10th, 2011.

Android Market Web Store Now Checks Which Apps Are Compatible With Your Devices
Google has already made some tough moves to tackle fragmentation, but it’s clearly still wary of the problem. It’s just tweaked the Android Market web store to show users which apps are compatible with which of their gadgets. Of course, compatibility screening was already in place for users who accessed the Market from within their device, but this update should still be of use to those who surf the web store, especially if they’re rocking multiple handsets or a phone-plus-tablet combo.
Engadget

HTC Sense Phones Could Soon Outperform iPhone Sales
There’s no doubt that consumers and business users alike are the winners in the sales battle between Apple and HTC. Ironically, Apple negotiated a $200 price point for the iPhone 3G a few years ago, which set a new standard for high-end smartphones. On June 24, the EVO 3D will revolutionize what you get for $200. Will the next iPhone powered by iOS 5 be sold for $100 with a two-year contract? Only time will tell.

Microsoft Shutting Down Windows Mobile Market, My Phone Service
Microsoft has alerted Windows Mobile 6 customers that the company plans to shut down the entire service, including the ability for new developers to submit new applications on July 15th. Though customers will still be able to purchase and redownload apps, we’re guessing that’s coming to a close pretty soon as well. Additionally, Microsoft’s My Phone service — the software and service that backs up data on your phone including multimedia — will be going offline as well on August 7th. The goods news is that there’s Windows Phone, and this is a logical step towards shifting consumers over to the new ecosystem.
BGR

What Is NFC, And Why Do We Care?
The introduction of Google Wallet felt a little too good to be true, didn’t it? It’s magical, like the tech equivalent of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. In reality, the tech behind mobile payments has been around since 2003 on a much smaller scale using near-field communications, more commonly known as NFC. The idea behind Wallet (amongst other services, like ISIS) is contactless pay — using your phone as a credit card — and is just one of the many ways NFC can be useful in our everyday lives. In fact, we’re only scraping the surface of what’s theoretically possible.
Engadget

Rumour: Bell To Exclusively Release The HTC Sensation
We are hearing more talk about Bell exclusively picking up the HTC Sensation. Still unconfirmed but sources say it could land as early as this July. No prices have been declared but this comes with OS 2.3 with HTC Sense 3.0, a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Wi-Fi , 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and a 1.2 front facing camera.

The HTC 7 Pro cell phone could launch on Verizon, I would really like to see this happen. This is the phone that I was hoping Verizon would announce from the beginning. I’ve been waiting on a WP7 phone for a while. The HTC 7 Pro cell phone is super fast. This is a great phone with many software features built in like Zune, Office and Xbox Live. The OS is easy to use and very responsive. Windows Mobile 7 is a great OS I love using it. Phone is very fast does not lag on any app or program. it is a little thick but not heavy.

The new HTC Incredible S cell phone has a front facing camera, better screen, larger screen, 1 Ghz 2nd generation snap dragon, that being the best improvement over the 1st gen processor in the first incredible. Looks like a nice phone, decent size. 4.0″ WVGA display, 768MB RAM, 8MP rear cam, 1.3MP front cam, Sense 2.0, and HTC’s top of the line build quality. Sounds pretty pretty sweet to me. It is said Incredible S has AWS 3G/4G for T-Mobile.

The new HTC Desire S cell phone looks promising tho. The Snapdragon MSM8255 is a 2nd gen chipset, newer than the ones from Nexus One and Incredible. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is Good. The fact that it the phone is very fast is good, 768RAM is nice. This phone looks much better and you can Skype on it with the front camera. Man I hope Desire S would come to AT&T.

The Desire S could well be the upgrade for my HTC Legend. It will be updating Android to 2.4 in the spring and are still calling it Gingerbread.

Whatever you are paying for tethering, it’s too much. PdaNet is a free tethering solution that works great and is completely free. (They also offer a paid version for a one-time cost of $23.95, currently on sale for $15.95, which allows you to access secure sites).

Specifically, PdaNet is a cross-platform application that allows you to tether your smartphone to your laptop or PC and access the internet, without incurring additional costs.

PdaNet has come to my rescue in a different way. Since I live in a rural area, I am unable to receive a true high-speed connection. Instead I have to rely on a very slow satellite internet provider who shall remain nameless. But by jacking my smartphone into my home PC and turning on PdaNet, I dramatically increase my upload and download speeds.

Better still, when I lose my satellite connection altogether due to snow or rain, I get it back immediately simply by turning on PdaNet and surfing the internet via my cell phone carrier network instead of the clumsy satellite service.

Most folks, however, will find PdaNet an excellent free tether solution to their laptops when they are away from home and no WiFi is available.

As mentioned, PdaNet is a cross-platform application, so it will work on Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, PalmOS and Windows Mobile. Click here for the download.

If you are as skeptical as I am about any application that claims to accomplish a meaningful task without hassle, test drive the free version and see what you think.

In order to use PdaNet, the application must be loaded onto both your smartphone and the laptop you intend to use. What’s more, you do not need to purchase the paid version for each laptop; only for the smartphone you intend to tether.

For a complete list of PdaNet FAQ, click here.

As for speed, PdaNet fares quite well. While clearly not DSL, it does offer excellent tethering speeds.

According to June Fabrics, maker of PdaNet, “PdaNet can handle at least 35Mbps (35000kbps, currently no data service can even get close to that). It has been optimized to run with zero latency, which means you should expect the exact same download speed on the computer compared to your phone (except for Bluetooth DUN which may have a baud rate limit.)”

As far as utility apps go, PdaNet is most definitely a dime in a handful of nickels. If you decide to try it out, please let us know what you think.
